The Student Skope and Classic Boreal Student
Microscope come completely assembled. To use your new
microscope simply unpack it and remove the protective covering
from the lenses. If you do not have access to electricity,
you can remove the substage illuminator and install the mirror
on the Student SKope. First, remove the screw from the
bottom of the illuminator that holds the illuminator to the "L"
bracket. Pull the illuminator and pin straight out of the
arm of the microscope. If you plan to reinstall the
illuminator, you can leave the "L" bracket in place, otherwise,
remove the screw holding the "L" bracket to the arm of the
microscope and remove the "L" bracket entirely. Either
way, the mirror fits into the round bracket where the
illuminator was. See the sections on the use and care of
the compound microscopes for further tips.
Your microscope may come with the objectives in
separate containers. If so, unpack the microscope.
and remove the protective coverings. Take
the 4x objective out of its container. Check the top of
the objective and make sure the black backing is flush to the
top of the threads. If not, screw it down until it is.
Then carefully fit the objective into one of the holes in the
rotating nosepiece. The objective should screw in very
smoothly with almost no resistance. Be careful not to
cross thread the objective. Repeat this process with the
10x and the 40x objective. The objectives should be placed
so you can switch from 4x to 10x to 40x easily. For many
people this means having the nosepiece rotate clockwise to
increase magnification. See the sections on the use and
care of compound microscopes for further tips.

- Unpack your microscope and wipe off any dust
or expanded polystyrene that may be adhering to it. Check
to make sure that the stage, condenser bracket, nosepiece and
knobs are secure. Locate the extra fuse and filters and
make sure you save them. Remove the Velcro strips and
packing braces that keep the stage from moving up and down
during shipping and unwrap the illuminator lens.
